Big Sky is best known for Lone Peak's extreme, exposed expert terrain and its sheer scale -- 5,850 skiable acres and a 4,350-foot vertical drop, among the largest in the country. That reputation can make it sound intimidating for a family trip, but the Explorer and Madison base areas hold dedicated beginner and learning terrain well away from Lone Peak, and the resort runs named kids seasonal ski and snowboard programs. It is one of the less crowded major US resorts relative to its size. Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport is about 45 minutes away, an easier transfer than several other big-mountain Western resorts.
