Snowmass itself, with its dedicated kids center and beginner terrain, is a genuinely strong family base -- but the combined Aspen Snowmass brand also includes Aspen Mountain, which has no beginner terrain at all, so families should be specific about basing out of Snowmass, not just "Aspen."
One ticket covers four connected Aspen-area mountains; Snowmass is the one built for families, with a dedicated kids ski school and Elk Camp beginner terrain, while Aspen Mountain skews expert.
Aspen Snowmass is really four mountains on one lift ticket -- Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk, and Snowmass -- and they are not equally suited to families. Snowmass is the one built with families in mind: it has its own dedicated Treehouse Kids' Adventure Center, a large beginner-friendly Elk Camp area, and enough varied terrain that kids can progress for years without leaving the mountain. Aspen Mountain itself, by contrast, has no beginner terrain at all and is built for advanced and expert skiers -- worth knowing so a family doesn't accidentally base out of the wrong mountain. Kids ski free with a qualifying lodging package for ages 6 and under, and a separate deal offers free lift tickets with equipment rental for ages 7-12. Aspen/Pitkin County Airport is about 15-20 minutes away but has limited flight capacity; Eagle County Regional (near Vail) or Denver International are common alternates for a wider range of flights.
